1. Overview

Dunfermline Community Speed Watch has been undertaken as a partnership approach to tackling concerns around speeding and promoting safer driving across the Dunfermline area.

The initiative has provided trained community volunteers with an opportunity to play an active role in improving road safety, identifying locations where speeding is a concern and providing an additional visible presence within local communities.

Deployments have taken place across a number of roads and locations, covering both 20 mph and 30 mph speed limits. Where vehicles were identified travelling above the relevant speed limit, warning letters were issued to the registered keepers.

Across the campaign, 21 individual deployments were undertaken, with 95 vehicles detected travelling above the relevant speed limit.

There were also several deployments where no speeding vehicles were identified, including Limekilns Road on 20 August and 4 September, and Halbeath on 4 September.

4. Location observations

The data provides a useful indication of where speeding concerns were most evident during the campaign.

Waggon Road recorded the highest overall number of vehicles detected over the limit, with 34 vehicles across its two deployments.

Aberdour Road also demonstrated recurring speeding concerns, with 25 vehicles recorded across four deployments.

Carnock Road was monitored on five occasions, recording 17 vehicles over the limit in total. This demonstrates the value of returning to locations on multiple occasions rather than relying on a single deployment.

The results also demonstrate that speeding levels can vary considerably between deployments, with some locations recording no vehicles over the limit while others recorded significantly higher numbers.

5. Community involvement

A key strength of Community Speed Watch has been the involvement of local volunteers. Their contribution has provided additional capacity to support road-safety activity while strengthening the connection between Police Scotland and the communities we serve.

The visible presence of volunteers undertaking Speed Watch activity also provides an opportunity to engage positively with motorists and raise awareness of the importance of complying with speed limits.

The Dunfermline Community Speed Watch campaign has provided valuable information regarding speeding across a number of locations and has given local volunteers an important role in supporting road safety.

Across 21 deployments, 95 vehicles were identified travelling above the relevant speed limit. The results demonstrate both locations where speeding was more prevalent and areas where compliance appeared to be good during particular deployments.
